theologer: Rejoice in the Lord (Philippians 3:1)

I'm puzzled by your surprise. Or at least I would be if I didn't partly understand the American evangelical scene. Have you never read Deuteronomy 14:26? There there is a positive command from God to buy wine and fermented drink and rejoice in the Lord's presence by drinking it.

    Peter,
I was surprised by it as I just hadn't ever put it into words. But
also it seemed to me that everyone I know who enjoys alcohol does it
with some sort of reservation. For instance my father raised me
drinking a beer every once and while, but then he himself seldom
drinks now because he is in ministry and doesn't want to make people
stumble (Which I respect). I woke up naked in a hospital in college
because I drank (what I was later told was) about half a bottle of
whiskey. I had to apologize to all kinds of people and show how a
christian recovers from such a thing...
Only later was I able to enjoy alcohol while rejoicing in the Lord.
Too many people I'm surrounded by just think it an absolute sin...
    anyhoo.

    Jeff,
Its funny that you say it this way. Some of the times I have felt
closest to the Lord were conversations with brothers over a beer or a
    cigar. It's true.

All this to say, I know we're supposed to rejoice in His creation. But
sooooo many people are so uptight about these things its easy to
    forget they're God's creation.

I smoke a cigar a few times a year and happened to do that just last time. These are always great times of prayer and praising God for his creation.

I roast my own coffee and buy the best beans available which still costs less than buying quality roasted beans anywhere. I'm amazed at the flavors God put in those beans and know that He enjoys me enjoying it.
